What is managed SCADA?
Managed SCADA is a service model where a provider — like Mission Communications — hosts, maintains, and supports the entire SCADA system on behalf of the utility. Instead of purchasing and managing your own servers, software, and communication infrastructure, you get monitoring, alarm management, reporting, and technical support as a service. It’s similar to how cloud computing replaced on-premise servers: you get all the capability without the capital expense or IT burden.
How is managed SCADA different from traditional SCADA?
Traditional SCADA requires utilities to purchase hardware, install radio or wired communication networks, license software, and maintain everything in-house. Managed SCADA from Mission eliminates all of that. We provide the RTU hardware, cellular connectivity, cloud-based 123SCADA software, and 24/7 support — all included in a single annual service fee. There’s no upfront capital expense, no IT staff required, and deployment takes days instead of months.
How much does Mission’s managed SCADA service cost?
Pricing is based on the number of monitored sites and the I/O requirements at each location. How quickly can managed SCADA be deployed?
Most sites can be up and running within 2–4 hours of RTU delivery. Mission’s RTUs arrive pre-configured and self-enroll into the 123SCADA platform upon power-up. There’s no programming, no radio path engineering, and no IT integration required. Many utilities go from first conversation to live monitoring in under two weeks.
What types of sites can Mission monitor?
Mission monitors virtually any water or wastewater infrastructure asset: lift stations, pump stations, water storage tanks, wells, booster stations, manholes, rainfall stations, treatment plants, PRV stations, and more. If it has a sensor, we can monitor it.
Do I need cellular coverage at my sites?
Mission’s RTUs use multi-carrier cellular technology, automatically connecting to the strongest available network (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile). In most of the continental United States, cellular coverage is sufficient. For sites in extremely remote areas, contact us to discuss coverage options.
Is cloud-based SCADA secure?
Yes. The 123SCADA platform uses encrypted data transmission, role-based access controls, and secure cloud hosting. Because Mission manages the infrastructure, security updates, patches, and monitoring are handled continuously — eliminating the risk of unpatched on-premise systems that are common with traditional SCADA.
Can Mission integrate with my existing equipment?
The M800 RTU supports MODBUS integration, allowing it to communicate with existing PLCs, VFDs, flow meters, and other field instruments. If you have legacy SCADA equipment, Mission can often integrate with it to extend monitoring capabilities without replacing your existing investment.
